So stoked to discover this Forem! I'm Ella and, like Michael, I work at Forem.

Born in London, I've lived in the frontlines of environmental racism most of my life, working as a community organizer in inner city communities in the UK, Australia, and the US. A significant part of my work over the years has involved community health and wellbeing, and bearing witness to the impact of people's environment and microclimates on their health and ability to care for themselves.

My family is from rural Malaysia, where my lifetime has coincided with a desperate landgrab of pristine rainforest to turn into palm oil plantations, the destruction of homes and livelihoods for countless indigenous humans and all other species, and the loss of native medicine and wisdom. Every time we return to the country we call "home" it feels less like somewhere we once knew.

I now live in Bretagne, in the west of France, where the intersection of capitalism and climate change is eroding the fabric of connection in historically agricultural communities. It's the flip side, and it ain't pretty either.

The connections between us and the environments we depend upon are becoming strained, and the most vulnerable people across the entire web are the ones who are worst affected. We need sustainability in so many facets of our lives. So glad you've created this space, @oli - can't wait to see what it becomes!

Emilie Scofield

I'm Emilie Scofield. I studied Environmental Health in college as an elective because I've always had an interest in the environment and wanted to combine it with my Fashion degree. As we all know the fashion industry has a horrible carbon footprint and less than reputable social responsibilities so I wanted to find ways I can help the industry. I want to meet likeminded people in this community.

I think I will share a weekly sustainable living goal with the community which I hope will inspire other members.

Really awesome to be here, y'all!

My name is Michael and I work for Forem (the platform that this community built on). I live in Pittsboro, NC and love the outdoors. I'm particularly upset with the water quality in my area due to PFAs and am interested in finding ways to fight water pollution. I'm also the son & brother of contractors who do quite a bit of building in the area β€” I'm constantly sending them articles on sustainable building materials like this one here on using mycelium for insulation.

And not to upset any meat-eaters out there, but I also think that it's particularly important to be aware of the environmental impact of what we're eating. Eating veggies seems to have a much more minimal impact on the earth. I can't say that I always abide by this, but I'm making a solid effort to eat less meat and visit my local farmer's market to pick up fresh fruit and veg.

Anywho, this is a great idea for a community and I'm excited to see where this goes!

Glad to have you here @michael . Sorry to hear about the PFAs contamination in Pittsboro. PFAs issues in the UK are barely reported on. I fear fresh water might become a scarce resource in the near future.
As for eating meat, I was horrified when I discovered the environmental damage caused by the meat industry. However, I've noticed more meat alternatives in stores so I think we're heading in the right direction. Again nice to have in the community.

Thank you for inviting me to this community. I'm Maya from Chicago and I'm starting a sustainable fashion brand soon. I want to learn from other members of the group and maybe also teach them what I know about the fashion world.
