Tips for finding jobs in sustainability sector

Hey everyone, I wanted to create a post where we share the types of jobs there are in Sustainability and the ways to find such jobs. I know it's not easy to define a sustainable job but let's try not to get too critical with other people's definition of sustainability.

Here are a few sustainability career options that I've found exciting:

Sustainability Consulting - you can start as a freelancer and reach out to corporations of all sizes to offer your services, and how you can help them improve their operations.

Teaching - you can pass on your knowledge to other people by teaching at a local schools/colleges or you can create an online course using Udemy to educate people who are new to the subject.

Podcasting - you can start a podcast on green living where you share your experiences with listeners. I've learned that listeners develop a deep relationship with podcasters so this a good way to develop a passionate following.

Local Gardening Project - you can run a food growing project if you live somewhere rural or urban with open public spaces where you can work with the local government to grow vegetables that can be sold or donated to local businesses.

E-commerce - this is an obvious one but how about trying something a little different. You can run an e-commerce business that also lengthens the life of clothes and household items by repairing them.

Event Management - you can organize people's special events at vegan restaurants and help your clients make sustainable party options.

Wanted to start a gardening project where I live but it was impossible to get the land or anyone in the government interested in the project. Unless you’re rich and have a lot of connections, you cannot do anything like that over here.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe you can start with something small in your own home and use that as an example to persuade the local government. Best of luck!

This is a good idea. I had the idea for a sustainability job board the other day so I looked around and found that many already exist. For anybody interested here are a few: vegpreneur.org and terra.do
I think with e-commerce the possibilities are endless. You can sell refillable bottles, water machines, solar panels, or you can even try hosting an electric vehicle charging stations around your city.

I agree the possibility for a sustainability e-commerce business is pretty wide ranging. EV charging stations is a terrific idea too.

@emilie , those are some great career options for anyone interested in sustainability. I particular like the idea of Podcasting because it sounds like fun and you can really connect with an audience in a fulfilling way. I would add running a conservation project to the list of potential careers too. It might sound as cool but I think it’s an incredibly rewarding career.

Are you kidding? Conservation is very cool. I wanted to be a conservationist when I was a child. Have you done conservations before?

Yep! Growing up, we did some conservation work in our local park and I always enjoyed it.
